Spondylolisthesis

Spondylolisthesis is the forward or backward movement or slippage of one vertebrae or the adjoining one. If slight or none of the symptoms are there, then really there is no such need of treatment. Spondylolisthesis is not typically an excruciating or painful state. People who experience pain will possibly be asked about their activities and routine work. If any of the symptoms is justified with spondylolisthesis then the patient would be advised to avoid those activities which can worsen the condition.

On the basis of the treatment of Spondylolisthesis, it is further classified into (1) Dysplastic Spondylolisthesis (2) Neucoplastic Spondylolisthesis (3) Degenerative Spondylolisthesis (4)
Traumatic Spondylolisthesis (5) Pathologic Spondylolisthesis (6) Isthmic Spondylolisthesis.

The vertebral column is a framework of bones which is kept over the spinal cord so as to protect it. As the spinal cord is very important to the body, the vertebral column also keeps an important role in the function of spinal cord.

Surgical treatment is usually chosen as the last resort. If the slippage of the vertebral column is continued even after the therapy and condition is worsen then surgical approach can hopefully become a wise treatment to be carried for effective results. A fusion of vertebrae is performed by reconnecting the lumbar spine and the sacrum. If any doubt of a degeneration of spondylolisthesis is found, then internal hardware such as cages, pins or screws shall be used to fasten the slipped vertebrae back on its position.

Always remember that surgical treatment of spondylolisthesis is prescribed to only few cases because operation is risky enough to be carried in vertebral region of the body. However the best and the most effective treatment found and observed is the physical therapy of the patient.
